    Disconnecting the cable should solve the problem. There is a chance that you have a item in the startup folder that is attempting to connect everytime you start windows.

    Others may not like the direct way I go about this, so you may get other suggestions. If disconnecting the modem cable doesn't work, click Start>All Programs>Startup and look for problem program. It should be obvious as to which program is the problem. Right Click on the the item that you want to remove and click Delete.
