    How to: no password for win98

    I fixing a friend's computer. I got it working but it's asking for password. The PC is, shall we say, dumpster material (very old) - How to get around this without reinstalling OS? Is it possible? Thanks

    *edit - appears they were just user accounts - I clicked cancel and it opened windows

    edit - Yup. Win 98 has no security that way...

    umm... it's the escape key...hehe

    i think we had a post long ago about resetting the password but i'll leave it to someone with a better memory than mine

    I hit cancel and it worked. Now the problem is connection. It's not finding a connection. I have cable router hooked to it. Not sure which "com" it is.

    haha, windows 98 is annoying. I have to look for stuff.

    Think you need driver for that - raspppoe comes to mind

    Password - there is a file in windows directory - ending I think is pwl but check pw* - delete it and you are set. Or set networksettings to windows family and not ms network client - than it will not ask again.

    Thats what I can remember - hope memory isn't damaged (.-)

    You have a .pwl file for each user that the system has ever had - they store encrypted password information for you. Delete them all and log out and back in without a password. Next boot goes staright to desktop unless you have network logon which will ask for a network password on every boot.

    After deleting*.pwl and rebooting, if MS Networking asks for a password enter a username and leave the PW line blank. Hit enter.
