    Egg,
install a software firewall, if you dont already have it, set it up to warn you before allowing incoming and outgoing traffic.
    next,
    get the Xp antispy package.

    enjoy,
    BB

as always, I would really consider installing BETA or pre-release software and service packs... word to the wise, it might make your system screwed, then again it might go very smoothly.

    hey boogs:

i use zonealarm xp-antispy ad-aware ad-subtract and that program that updates your aspi layer and disables zip folders ect..
i forget what its called because i dont need to re-format much with xp

so the service pack is beta testing friendly for us secret XPerienced users.
    lol!

    hey big booger:

i fella came into the shop about a few weeks ago
he purchased a firewire card for his puter
he had 6 hd totalling 320gb 1 hd was mysteriously de-connected
he has the missing cable , yet free ide port, free power connector
    (and probably free paranoia)
we installed the firewire card and started his computer
5 min later it finally hit the desktop
    whew...

i installed all the video software and rebooted
    5 min later i say
"what the hell's up with that boot time?"
he says he never turns it off (what a joke!)

i suggest bootvis from m$ and hook the high speed cable up
after searching the start menu for iexplorer i see its gone

he says he chose not to install it during settup
    wtf???

this guy had a version of xp that let you choose what you want xp to install

    taskman reported 11 running processes
he has realplayer quicktime opera all in the system tray

    weird...
    no winzip

just programs that are bulky and require many steps to do simple things like open zip folders

anyone remember those old dos programs for file managment

this scared me because i couldnt figure out how to get the stupid thing online
(no options anywhere to select ethernet)
just dial-up(our phone line is to noisy for dial-up)
i installed bootvis and it proceeded to do its thing
    than it rebooted
9 min later it finally showed up on the desktop complaining
that it couldnt defrag the boot partition due to defrag not being installed

i think this is a glimps of the future of computer troubleshooting and i think it would be easier to be a biologist

my boss suggest a format and a fresh and full install of xp and a plus pack for good measure or maybe a mac

    sorry for the long post

    cheers egghead

now onto the xp sp1 install

I love good PC stories. Here is mine.

Three weeks ago my boss tells me to go to the Holiday Inn and fix someones laptop. This is all hush hush, no discussion about it at work, he tells me. I ask who do I contact when I get to the hotel and he says tell the front desk who you are and await instructions. Well, okay.

The front desk asks for my I.D., gives me a key, and tells me to have a nice day. Hey, this is not the norm for the company I work for, so I call my boss and ask what the hell is going on? He says hush hush, no discussion, get my ass to work. Okay.

I knock and no answer. Open the door, ask if anyone is there, hear nothing, peek inside and see a laptop sitting on a small desk. WTF. Laying on the keyboard is a note that reads "It won't connect to the internet!" That is all - nothing else. The laptop (IBM) is on with AOL (American Online) minimized in the task bar. I open AOL and look at the modem setup. It was wrong so I changed it. I eject a PCMCIA modem and find that it is the wrong type for what the hotel connection provides. I call my boss and tell him that the laptop's modem needs replaced. He tells me to buy one, replace it, and do it fast. Fine. Company credit card. Mall across the street. EURO 215 and 45 minutes later I log into AOL using my companies account. Shut it down, return the key, and back to the office.

Next morning the boss calls me into his office. Surprise, the Company CEO from the states is sitting there. The laptop from the hotel is sitting on my bosses desk. Turns out that it was the CEOs laptop at the hotel and he would like me to explain to him how to get on the internet. I show him. He says "Well, I'll be damned. No one has ever explained it to me like that. Thanks for all your help son." The boss walks me to the office door and quietly says hush hush, no discussion, get your ass back to work.

Three days later I check my office email and there is something from "My Company", "CEO", Subject: Laptop. I open it and it says "Thanks for a job well done. What do I owe you?"

I replied with a small note, "My bosses job. Hush Hush, no discussion, get your ass back to work."

    Yesterday, I was promoted

Gald you all enjoyed it. My boss was promoted and I was promoted into his position. The pay is a little better, but not worth the hassels really. I spend more time doing everyones homework and less time working on the PCs.
