Well if you have an old motherboard it might not support a large HD.

As for the OS 98se, it'll works with large HD's if you make sure you follow something like This

fat32 has a file size limit of 4 gigs.

One of the nice things with xp and the NTFS file system is that it breaks that barrter and you can create files larger than 4 gigs

this is perfect for making your own movies and backing up full 12gig dvd's to view at a later date.

fat32 is the file system used by windows98/me

you can create and use partitions over 80 gigs using fat32.

you cannot create a file size bigger than 4gigs on a fat32 file system. the file will become corrupt and useless.

ntfs is a file system used by windows 2000 and xp

thius file system does not have a 4 gig file limit and is used for video editing.

the one with windows 98SE was custom made for me... it's hooked up pretty good, 2.8Ghz P4, 512mb ram, and got an ati (sapphire) radeon 9800 pro on it., and of course my nec 15inch lcd and it's in a Highest Xaser III V1000A Super Tower.. I like it . my laptop is pretty but sucks for games lol

I wnder if you would get better performance from xp...

I am not 100% sure but I think most features your cpu support are only availble to xo users.

hey thanks ... yeah, I would have had him (the tech guy who built my pc) put XP, but he insisted that I didn't need to spend the money... and he put 98SE for free (he's also my friend). I figured as long as it worked right… whatever…

I only use it for my games and stuff like that.... though XP is fairly cheap right now so I may upgrade pretty soon... never know.

you should be able to do a direct upgrade from win98 to win2000 or even XP... however, most people recommend doing a 'clean' install... simply to eliminate any risk of incompatible software/hardware and drivers etc...

But, essentially, win2k and winXP both support and will work ok, on fat32 system
