    Win98 SE

I would not attempt to run XP on a 233 Mhz CPU

absolutely, win98. i don't even think there's enuf memory to run win xp on it. small box like that should use the safest n cleanest os m$ put out using fat 32 filing, win98 se. i believe they closed the book on updating their support for it, tho. you're also gonna have to d/l a bunch of fixes for it, once you load it from disk. you'll be visitin the windows update page for a while, but it'll be worth it in the end, more so than win me. i never d/l'd that os, but i heard it was real trash. ~s

Win98 SE has all the updates for Win98 up to its release date. The rest of them can be obtained and easily applied.

Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack Homepage

Softpedia Download for the Service Pack

Download Page for Microsoft Windows 98 Updates
(will have any updates you think you need which are not included in the unofficial Service Pack)

I have a windows 2000 server running on less than that and it works lovely - it's even a dc and does DHCP and DNS for 20 machines. 2000 pro is where I would go.

Windows xp on a 333mhz runs great even to surf the net. you want to have at least 256 ram but i suggest more. the more ram the faster it seems on these slower machines.

meh, you should just buy a new PC... you can have one built fairly cheap.

Oh, and keep that PC as it is...
