Hidden administrators
In Windows XP, I found around 5 IDs based on my name, yet Users in Control Panel shows just one. And there is some ntuser.dat stuff I don't understand. I have DSL and a network consisting of my PC only. External DSL modem, with an Ethernet card in the puter. I don't know what-all should be allowed authorization to access the Internet, and vice-versa.

well since your on broadband do you have a firewall set up? If so it should ask you when something is trying to get on line and you can let it or not.

Have you recently done an upgrade from Home to Pro version of XP, or do you know if you have Roaming Profiles enabled on your version of XP, so therefore you may have various Administrators ntuser.dat profiles stored.
try sorting it out here:
