XP Home uses a method called Simple File Sharing.Details here

XP PRO uses the above method, and also has a feature called Access Control List (ACL).Details here

There is a standalone program that offers several security options form individual folders called "Hide Folders XP"
    Info here

    Also make a compressed folder

I seem to remember being able to make a passworded compressed folder with XP. I used it to certain files. All I had to do was drag and drop into this folder and it would preserve it under a compressed format as well as being able to enter a password to view whatever was placed into the folder.
I think this was created in Explorer and from the file menu select compressed folder. You may be able to right click to bring up the menu. Wish I could say more but am not at home..... maybe try a search on commpressed folders
