Hey man,
I had this same exact problem a while back.Sadly i was never able to solve it.Ended up formating.I suspect from what i was told here at TZ that some form of codec incompatibility may be the cause.Good luck if you happen to find a solution please let us know.

Can you play AVI files at all?
Firstly try disabling disabling thumbnails
From any open folder in Windows Explorer and, right click on the background and select View>Icons
Select Tools>Folder Options, in the tasks group select "Use classic folders"
Select the View tab and click on the "Apply to All Folders" button.
Click Ok.

Try this registry fix:
Start > Run > type "regedit" (without quotes). OK.
Navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTSystemFileAssociations.avishellexPropertyHandler
right click the Default value in the right hand pane and select Delete then close regedit.
Note: backup the registry first before making any changes.
