Welcome to Techzonez. Did you have a tape in the drive when trying to view the icon in My Computer?

IS this USB or SCSI?
Make sure the device is connected correctly:
USB

Also if it has the configuration switch, check to see if the switches are set properly.
Try a new tape, and if anything, try the device in another computer to see if there is some conflict with the machine itself and your Tape drive.

Can you see the device in device manager!!
Some dat drives do not show in My Computer, they can usually be viewed by opening the Windows XP backup utility, or if you have veritas and you can see it in the device manager, use the add device in veritas, this will install the veritas drivers and you can view the tape drive from within veritas.
Hope this helps.

also, you need to check the computer management has assigned removable device in the pool. then i dont think it is viewed/used via my computer... more backup programs like NTbackup, veritas etc etc...
