    Computer is misbehaving--annoyingly

Actually, it's my son's computer but we were trying to solve the problem together and I said I'd write Techzonez for help--since System Restore would not restore.

This may be the wrong forum...but I've no clear idea whether the problem is spyware, a virus or just screwed-up XPSP2, Pro edition. We suspect a virus or spyware/

The problem began about April 8. System Restore efforts to restore back to April 6 and 7, and then to April 2 and 3 all resulted in "System Restore can't restore to these dates."

    Here's what is happening:

When we are using a Videochat program (a very good one - not free), Bruce's monitor will suddenly go black, then the computer shuts down and reboots.

A NAV virus scan will in the middle of its run, result in the computer suddenly shutting down all by itself and then rebooting.

The homepage in MSIE defaults to http://www.safetydefender.com every time MSIE is called up.

Spybot, run after an update, finds nothing.

On or about April 8 two programs appeared in the Program listing. We've no idea how they got there. They are: Security Troubleshooting; url is http://youronlinesecurity.com. Then: Onlinesecurity Guide; url is http://safetydefender.com. They appeared like legitimate sites--I found the first one anyway via Google and visited the site and have had no problem. ????

Has someone run into this situation/problem and so can advise us re cause and solution?

    Thanks!

I've created my own website...a collection of moving, sad and happy and humorous poems which I would like to share with others. They come from stories my dad used to tell me when I was a kid. If you could glance at my site and if you know of others who might enjoy it and perhaps tell them of it, I would be most appreciative. Thank you.
