Sharepoint on SBS 2003 wont start???

I have an issue with my Small Business Server 2003. My company homepage wont open and i get sharepoint errors. i tried restarting the sharepoit service but it just stops again, almost instantly. i have checked the permissions for sharepoint and all is well.

anyone have any ideas, before i revert to a backup tape.

    Thanks guys

Are you able to post any of the error messages logged in Event Viewer?

    Event ID 1000

I have googled this and found only a couple if things 1st was about security and the other was sql, i have re-installed sql, and the permissions on the sharepoint are as they should be.

also the companyweb page comes back with this :

Cannot connect to the configuration database. For tips on troubleshooting this error, search for article 823287 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com.

i have checked this aswell and comes back to permissions, but as i say, they are correct. as far as i can tell nothing has attacked the server, and no one has access to it except myself, and i havent changed anything in months, but this has only started happening over the last week.

#50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on SBSSERVER\SharePoint. Check the database connection information and make sure that the database server is running.

Have you tried the solution on this ms kb KB840685

    WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, add the DependOnService registry entry to the following registry subkey on the server, and then set the DependOnService registry entry to MSSQL$SHAREPOINT:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SPTimer
To do this, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SPTimer
    4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
    5. Type DependOnService, and then press ENTER
    6. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
    7. In the Value data box, type MSSQL$SHAREPOINT, and then click OK.
    8. Quit Registry Editor.

see the full kb article for details
