    You did have some good suggestions. My memory was from two manufacturers. I ordered another 512 MB stick to have a matched pair. I also ordered a sata HD. Should not have made a difference, but I will leave no stone unturned.

    Ubuntu is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu release supports PC (Intel x86), 64-bit PC (AMD64), UltraSPARC T1 (Sun Fire T1000 and T2000) and PowerPC (Apple iBook and Powerbook, G4 and G5) architectures.

    Finally, some good news to report. Received memory and HD this morning. Everything worked after the discovery that the CDRW had to be set up as "slave" and the Vlink data rate in BIOS had to be change from 8x to 4x.

    XandrOS is apparently happy on the new machine.
