MSN hotmail in outlook express 6

Hey guys,I noticed that today suddenly Outlook express can no longer send or recieve e-mail from my hotmail and MSN account. Not sure what is causing it since it worked perfectly fine for years. My hotmail account is a free account and MSN is a pay account which was givin with my DSL service.

Now that said i thought perhaps the incoming and outgoing servers may have changed since the new MSN Live services are now getting popular and decided to check Hotmails help page and noticed that it said that free accounts will no longer function in Outlook.Anyone else know anything about this?

No i havent,Hmm matter in fact the only thing i have done since i noticed this problem was install IE7 final.Other then that everything is the same as it's always been.

:EDIT: opps thought that was to me at first lol

Hey BB,what is the http server address you use in outlook?i have been using http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp

To be more specific when Outlook try's to check my mail from those accounts it begins to check then pops up asking for name/password over and over again (i have it saved so i dont have to manually type it each time) and i havent changed anything.Even tryed re-entering them just in case but in the end it will keep asking until i finally hit cancel.

That's the same hotmail addy I used.

    @Rev, I formatted about 4 weeks ago.

Could it be the upgrade to IE7 that is messing with your outlook express settings?

    http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles...layTab=Article
That article discusses them removing support for Outlook, Outlook Express for free hotmail users.

Citing concerns about spammers abusing the service, Microsoft will announce today that the company is dropping a feature from its Hotmail service that lets nonpaying customers access their Hotmail email from Microsoft Office Outlook and Outlook Express. The feature is based on a technology called Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV), an extension of the HTTP protocol on which the Web is based.

"Since we implemented Human Interactive Proof (HIP) to ensure that only humans and not automated systems were opening Hotmail accounts, spammers have found other ways to go after the system," MSN Lead Product Manager Brooke Richardson told me in a prebriefing Friday. "Recently, there's been an increase in exploits of the WebDAV protocol, which is used to enable people to access Hotmail from Outlook and Outlook Express. We've offered [this access] for free for some time, although it's typically a feature that other email providers charge for. But because of the rise in abuse of this protocol, we're making a change to WebDAV to curb abuse. Over the next few months, we're transitioning WebDAV to be available only to customers of our subscription services, such as Hotmail Extra Storage and MSN Premium. We expect this change will help us to more effectively stop spam emanating from Hotmail."
However my hotmail still works fine with Outlook Express (I don't have IE7 installed, nor do I plan to for quite some time.)

This is what i get with hotmail via OE:

Could not connect to Hotmail as ************.

Hotmail no longer allows email access via Outlook Express for free email accounts.

Please visit http://www.hotmail.com/oe to learn more.

Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCCF6

Are you using the British hotmail account or an american hotmail account?

I am using an American hotmail account:

If they stop allowing me to use hotmail with the service, I will switch from Outlook to Thunderbird in a heartbeat. The only reason I haven't so far is I couldn't get hotmail to work with Thunderbird.

Well gents, I gave Thunderbird a second go. And I can tell you without a moments hesitation that Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, Techzonez Mail, and my own providers mail all work with it:

    First download thunderbird:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

    Second, install it.

    Third, visit the following sites:

    For GMAIL:
    http://email.about.com/od/mozillathu...t/et121604.htm
Note you may have to change a few default port numbers for the server 587 I think it is.

Works wonderfull well if you follow the site to the letter.

    For Yahoo and Hotmail:

    First go to this site.

    http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html

Right click on all three of the download .XPI files and download them to your desktop or something.

Then in Thunderbird, under tools, Extensions, click the install button.

Navigate to the WEBMAIL XPI, install it.

Navigate to both the YAHOO and Hotmail extensions and install their XPIs as well.

Now test that it's working by closing thunderbird, reopening it, and then click tools, and extensions, then double click the webmail icon.

You should see 3 items under the server tab. Make sure they are green and NOT BLACK! If any of them are black click the ports button and change it to a value above 1024!!!

Next, go to the following site:

    http://webmail.mozdev.org/setup.html
And follow those instructions TWICE, once for hotmail using your hotmail information, and once for yahoo using your yahoo information (if you want both)

When you finished you're all setup!

The fruits of my labor above. (screw Outlook!)

Hmm, my Outlook still retreives my Hotmail so I assume it was only OE that they stopped? But the article indiates that both accesses will be removed. Maybe they just haven't reached me yet...

This is very strange indeed,I also use hotmail.com,Hmm guess i will also be jumping to thunderbird.Hey BB Does Thunderbird have the option to transfer messages from OE to it?My main verizon e-mail account stores messages locally on my PC so if i cant transfer them they will be lost.

Yes it does, you can transfer all your messages, contacts, and account information (though I like to have separate folders for my email accounts (I couldn't figure out how to separate them) so I only kept my ISP email account that I transferred. The rest I set up manually again so I could put them each into separate folders as you see in the image I posted before.
