I am using an old and lame p4 2.8ghz pc with 1 gig of DDR ram that I've been coastin on for the past 5 or 6 years now... been meaning to upgrade but I figure as long as it putts along I'll keep it..

Since I have never been into gaming, I have little need for a big heat-sink on my desk. I am currently running two desktops, both with amd sempron 2800+ processors. One is running Mint Linux 8 and the other is still using XP.
I do have a notebook with a dual core amd processor and vista. Hate vista but can't get everything I need to run on linux. Will probably try again in a few months.
How much do I use each?
Primary computer 95% of the time - Mint Linux 8
Banking and taxes - xp machine
When traveling or when I can take it away from my son, notebook using Vista

Since I am a gamer I am running an custom made PC by a great company (MYSELF!!)
Asus P5N-T deluxe motherboard with nvidia 780i chipset. Horrible chipset with lots of problems, but the only one that I could use at the time for SLI
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500, running just a bit overclocked
8 GB OCZ DDR2 1066 (I don't remember the model, but they have like a heat pipe, and they actually run cool.
Windows 7 x64 (complaining now that is not activated)
The OS is running from a OCZ vertex 30 GB SSD drive.
2x PNY Nvidia 8800 GT 512 MB in SLI
If you want a recommendation for a new PC get this combo
H55/Intel Core i3 530 and a 350 or 400 Watt 80plus PSU
I built one like that for work and it is very nice setup. It responds well in Windows 7 even using the integrated video inside the Core i3. The setup will also include a 16x PCIe if you would like to upgrade the video later on, but the best point is that it will use about 23~28 watts of power. My PC at home uses 480 Watts all the time, which most likely is because the PSU is 650 Watts (needed for the SLI)
I am currently saving a little of money to build a similar setup for a HTPC to replace my atom HTPC which stutters with anything higher than 720p (and even with 720p sometimes).
Most H55/H57 also support DTS passthru on the HDMI.

Still on the same system I used in 1990 something. Home built Dual P3-800. Had to replace the RAM, video card, and HDs a few times. Though I do have a few notebooks (desktop replacements) that are new and better for my work.

My main rig and Idle rig's monitors are on a coffee table in front of me. Main rig has 2 monitors and Idle rig has 1 they are all side by side. I use "Maxvista" to extend my desktop over both computers using one keyboard and mouse and it's pretty cool. Idle rig seems to be used more as just a monitor extension but is running windows 7 and looks sweet in aero

Using XP for main rig mainly due to work compatibility however directx 11 games is pushing me over to think of dual booting it in the future before a compete change.
Looks like you are staying up with the latest. I feel like trapped in a tech ice cube or something. I want to upgrade so badly but now I am working on my Corvette and it's sucking out all my disposable income... which SUCKS but I love my Vette.

I did some numbers last week, and 25 Watts PC will use a little over 3$ of electric a month, and a 480 Watts about 51$.
If your electricity is even more expensive it makes more sense to go low power. And windows 7 is quick to wake up from sleep, so it is easy to put the computers to sleep now
