new type of spam pop up
url below may be truncated if so here is primary
"mynetwatchman.com/kb/security/articles/popupspam/index"
There is a new type of spam popup unleashed on the unsuspecting. See http://mynetwatchman.com/kb/security...spam/index.htm
I thought that I was nuts last week when they started - I kept getting these pop up messages that got past zonealarm and I couldn't seem to kill them.
I understand that they are using the win2000 Messenger service. Another writeup said that if you weren't on a LAN and didn't use win2000 messenger that you could safely disable the service. Question is "How to do it"?
In researching this, another problem was discussed - some anti-virus vendors use win2000 messenger to alert users to new virus updates (I use Symantec and I think they do this, but haven't been able to find out from them if that is true or not.
Two questions -
1) does anyone know if Symantec uses win2000 messenger for their announcements
2) does anyone know - or can you point me to a web site that discusses how to disable win2000 messenger
After my last encounter with this new pop up - I think I may get their virus updates manually, if that is what it takes.
Thanks
Tom
