Every PlayStation 5 will ship with a controller in the box, but anyone thinking they can use existing DualShock 4 controllers as a backup or second pad are set to be disappointed.

As IGN reports, Sony has confirmed that PS5 games can't be played with PS4 controllers. In a post on the PlayStation.Blog, Sony answered a series of questions regarding which PS4 peripherals and accessories are compatible with PS5. In response to the question "Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?" Sony explained, "No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

It's not all bad news, though. The DualShock 4 (and other third-party PS4 controllers) can be used to play supported PS4 games on the new consoles. The PlayStation Camera, PS Move Motion Controllers, and PlayStation VR Aim Controller are also supported. Headsets will work, but the companion app isn't compatible with PS5. And finally, if you have any "Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks," they will work with both PS5 games and supported PS4 titles, although Sony does point out there are exceptions and you should check with the manufacturer.

It's unlikely to be much of a surprise that Sony requires the new controller for new games on new hardware. It's also likely third-party DualSense alternatives will appear soon after launch, allowing for a cheaper second pad to be picked up. And even then, a DualShock 4 remains useful if you decide to play PS4 games on the PS5.
