A Brazilian gamer who paid over $2,600 for a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti received a box from Amazon containing lots of sand, but no graphics card.

As VideoCardz reports, Mauricio Takeda ordered a Palit GeForce RTX 3090 Ti GameRock graphics card from Amazon during Prime Day. He didn't get a big discount on the price, though, as the card cost 14,500 RBL, which works out to roughly $2,637. When the package arrived, even though the Palit box was real and sealed, Takeda was suspicious of the weight and so recorded the unboxing and shared it as a TikTok video.

Sure enough, Takeda's suspicions were right and inside the box he found multiple containers of sand instead of the expected graphics card. It looks to be a classic case of the returns scam whereby someone orders a product, removes it from the packaging, and then returns the resealed box for a refund with enough weight inside to trick the returns staff handling the goods. Sadly, this isn't uncommon, but it's not always sand used to add weight. Sometimes there is a graphics card inside, it's just not the one your ordered.

Amazon was apparently not very eager to offer Takeda a refund, which led to him filing a lawsuit in small claims court. However, it wasn't until the story became a national headline in Brazil that Amazon reacted and set about resolving the complaint. We hope Takeda got his money back as graphics cards have fallen in price drastically and the scam may have ultimately saved him quite a bit of cash.
