I have no idea what a NIC even looks like. This is my first computer ever and it's only 9 months old.

Status shows "connected" at 100Mbps - it just won't pull an IP.

    do you have systemworks installed?
i got ythis from a thread with the exact same prob you have
    here is his solution

    Guess what everybody...
I had Systemworks installed, and everytime I tried to view my stats on Antivirus, it gave me an "not valid windows image" error. I guess somehow, the files got corrupted.

So I completely uninstalled Systemworks, and voila!! Everything went back to normal. Don't know what it is...if somebody knows about this particular software conflict...let me know.

    Thanks for everybody's help!

now here is the complete threadwith the problem
i hope it gives you idea's

The NIC is where you connect your broad band from the cable modem to the back of your pc...not the phone modem...looks the same but the NIC connector is alittle bigger than the phone plug.

well........I know that - besides, I would be hard pressed to try to plug it into the phone modem!
BTW - it lights up too.

Does it just slide out of the back?

LAN 5? I think there should only be one LAN present in Network Connections.

    lynchknot -

do the simple thing if you haven't already...

    power down the pc...
    unplug the cable modem...
    wait a few seconds...
    plug in the cable modem...
wait till all the lights come on...
    power on the pc...

I have to do this when I am flipping my pc's around. if i power on the pc before the cable modem is ready, the computer won't resolve the ip address.

For those of you who were at chat - I lost the connection and cannot get back. My PC is all screwed up after re-booting - 4 bit color and low resolution and it can't be changed - the slider doesn't work and the color only offers 4 bit. i also have flicker from hell and the option to chance refresh rate is gone.

    Lynch,
I had a surfboard modem in the states when I was on cable access. I remember I was on Charter's Pipeline service. I had the worst time trying to get it to work.

For your reference, this is what a typical NIC looks like:

Now, some things I would try, make sure the modem is connected to the cable in your home, with factory connectors. I tried to connect my modem up using a homebrew connector and for the life of me it would not send the IP to the PC.. The cable guy came out, installed a new factory cable with factory connectors, did a line test and everything worked great. He also said not to use any cable line splitters.. because that might impair the ability of the modem to function properly..
But he did say if you absolutely had to split it, then to use a line amplifier, I picked one up for 12 or 13 bucks..

Now if that is not the issue, and you still can't get the IP, have you tried resetting the modem? I think there is a button on the back that you push with a pin or something... it is very small.. My router and DSL modem both have one. Another thing, you might try is to call AT&T and make sure they have the right MAC address for your modem and make sure your service is connected.. maybe they forgot to set up your account... I know charter had screwed mine up so I called and double checked, before the cable guy came out...

I think AT&T must have poor service to come out, deliver the modem, but not get it functioning, and telling you it is your problem.. I would complain to them, telling them your PC works fine, you can connect fine on dialup and that they need to come out for a service call..
Keep at it though, I am sure you will figure it out.
Last thing, can you post a screenshot of your modem configuration page?
You usually get there by typing the default IP address of the modem, for me, it is 192.168.0.1, this is not the IP address that you show to the world, it is the modem's configuration IP. It lets you adjust some settings and stuff inside the modem.
Check your modem manual for that information. Here is more information about the configuration screen:
    http://www.webmonky.myby.co.uk/config.htm

You might want to check the logs within that configuration page to see if something is wrong.

Hey Lynch, did you try the scannow /sfc? I posted on the other forum to be sure to put a space after scannow ,then/sfc.Hope that works for you.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

The modem works. The installer tried her own laptop and got an IP right away.

There is no manual for this - there is a CD.

I have no cable tv so no problem there.

Everything checks out properly - just won't pull an IP.
