    Problem installing update

811630 Critical Update simply will not install. I am continually prompted to automatically update. I download the patch, it apparently installs but then, after a re-boot, the automatic update prompts me to apply the patch again. And so the process continues.

The same occurs if I go through windows update however it is a bit more verbose telling me that the installation failed.

This has not occured in the past and I have not made any changes to my firewall or my PC in general. Any ideas?

    No...that didn't work .

Conincedently, other updates (also critical) have since become available and have installed successfully yet 811630 still won't install. It's becoming more anoying since I'm prompted that "There are new updates to download" every few days.

(Yes I know I can disable automatic updates but I'd prefer to know when stuff is available.)

You can download the fileHERE from and install manually. Then restart and see if you get the automatic update notice for it,

It might work, then again it might not.

    Try this:
    Run Windows Explorer
    Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2, right click
it, Rename the Catroot2 folder to Catroot2old.
Reboot your computer, and then run Windows
    Update again.
    (from the microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup).

I believe that Nikto has pointed you to the promised land my brother.

It seems that doing what he says may just free you of this burden for which you have endured.
