Now I know there are literally hundreds of other solutions for doing this but for someone who wants to do it simply and without installing any third party product, Windows Media Series 9 is about as simple as it gets considering, if you run your updates for windows often enough, then you already have it installed.

About this guide:

If you want to use Microsoft® Windows Media® Player to transfer music from your CDs to a portable music player, create your own mix of songs (called a playlist), or create (burn) an audio CD for a party, you must first put together a music collection on your computer. Your first step in building that collection is probably to copy (or "rip") music CDs to your hard disk.

After you have copied music to your computer, you can use the Media Library feature to organize your music. As an additional benefit, after you copy music to your computer, you can listen to it without having to insert the original CD in the CD drive ever again.
