IE closed when clicking on an external link
I have Windows XP pro and IE 6. While browsing on a web page and click on links pointing to external pages, or that open a separate window, I get an error message "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" and it asks if I want to send the error report to Microsoft or not. Whatever my response is, IE closed. Thanks in advance for any help.

What does the error report say.
Also have you tried any of the solutions listed in a previous thread here

It does not offer a choice to view the error report. I did reset to the default settings and it is still the same.

Try this:
Go to Start > run and type in regsvr32 urlmon.dll and hit enter.
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, hit OK.
You might need to reboot first for the links to start working.

I think that the Reverend is knockin the nail on the head there...to follow that up:
Quit all programs that are running ( you can leave this page open )
Click the Start Button ( normally at the bottom left of your screen ) and then click Run.
Put regsvr32 urlmon.dll into the little box ( use highlight, copy and paste ) and then click OK.
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files:
Run regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
Run regsvr32 Msjava.dll
Run regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
Run regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
Run regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
Run regsvr32 Browseui.dll
Run regsvr32 Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)
Then reboot your computer. If that doesn't work then read the full story from Microsoft

I tried the "regsvr32" method as suggested by Reverend and rik and it still does not work.

Try running sfc /scannow from Start > Run to see if any files are corrupted. (leave a space between sfc and / )
You'll need your XP CD during the scan.
