When xp pro is sitting idle I get a information box on the desktop saying "invalid installation please reinstall"
Not really sure how to sort this one out so any help would be great :-)

try clicking start, click run, and type:
SFC /SCANNOW
Make sure you have your XP installation nearby as this is the system file checking utility for Windows.
Try that and see if it fixes it. If not post back and I'm sure a solution can be found.

Can you think of something you did before you started receiving this message? Any updates that you applied or any modifications (such as boot screens or themes) that you enabled?
I'd go with the reinstallation of XP or you could try pressing F8 at boot then selecting the Last Known Good Configuration
System restore is also a good bet. Try restore back to a time before the problem existed.

Thanks for every ones replies, I had installed a game demo and it looks like that caused the problem, once I rolled the reg back it was fine.
