Four Android apps banned from Google Play store as users urged to delete them

Nov 22, 2022 - 7:43 AM - by Reverend
Android users are being warned about a family of apps that were available to download until recently which aim to trick them into clicking on dangerous sites.

Cyber security experts at Malwarebytes discovered the four harmful apps, which together have been downloaded over one million times, contain malware which leads users to phishing sites. The apps all come from a developer called Mobile apps Group, and have since been removed from the Google Play store.

According to Malwarebytes, the apps may have avoided detection so far because there is a delay of up to a few days between downloading the app and it starting to exhibit "malicious behaviour". After the delay, the apps were found to open up phishing sites in Chrome - some of which attempted to trick unsuspecting users into clicking by telling them their device has been infected or that they need to install an urgent update.

The four apps in question from the Mobile apps Group are called:

  • Bluetooth Auto Connect
  • Driver: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB
  • Bluetooth App Sender
  • Mobile transfer: smart switch

These sites opened up in Chrome in the background even when the phone was locked, research by Malwarebytes found, meaning that the user's browser history would end up as a long list of "nasty" phishing sites designed to steal users' data. If you downloaded any of these apps before they were removed from the Google Play store, you should delete them immediately to help keep your mobile device and information safe.

Microsoft Teams is Getting Solitaire and Other Casual Games

Nov 16, 2022 - 7:27 PM - by Reverend
Microsoft Teams is adding a new feature that most users probably didn’t know they wanted: Casual games. Starting today, Teams enterprise and education customers can now play Solitaire, Minesweeper, and other casual games in Microsoft Teams.

“Playing games with coworkers has a powerful ability to foster relationships and collaboration. Although some may consider games at work a distraction, the benefits are plentiful,” explained Nicole Herskowitz, VP of Microsoft Teams.

To prove her point, the exec mentioned a study by Brigham Young University showing that teams playing casual games together were 20% more productive than other teams participating in more traditional team-building activities. Microsoft’s selection of casual games can be played during Teams meetings, with some games like Wordament supporting up to 250 players.

All these games will be accessible via a new Games for Work pilot app in Teams. Once the app has been enabled by IT pros, users will be able to access games in Teams meetings on desktop and mobile.

Microsoft to Expand Self-Repair Options for Customers

Nov 14, 2022 - 7:36 PM - by Reverend
Microsoft has revealed it is working with a “major US retailer” to build out its authorized repair network which will become available in early 2023.

In a statement to iFixit, the tech giant said the move is to “bring repair options closer” to customers. Microsoft is also making moves to deliver a “broad availability of spare parts for independent repairers and consumers" in the first half of 2023.

The company increased repairable features starting with the release of the Surface Pro 9. The tablet was released on Oct. 12 and carries various novel improvements such as a screwed-in battery, motherboard, thermal module, and surface connect port.

Microsoft is to make the Surface Pro 9 service guides, which include full repair instructions available for public download, “by the end of the calendar year.”

Tech companies have moved toward building out their self-repair capabilities in recent months. In August, Apple began selling official replacement parts for MacBooks through the company’s self-service repair store.

The store launched in April for US customers initially as a way to fix broken iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and third-generation SE models, but 2020 MacBook Air and 2021 MacBook Pro models built with the company’s M1 Arm chips were brought into the fold in August.

The company plans to expand the store to the European market before the end of the year, as well as expand the service to Mac models with Apple silicon chips. Since 2019, Apple has nearly doubled the number of repair service locations to which it supplies parts and tools.

Meanwhile, Google and Samsung have partnered with iFixit to offer repair parts for users. Under the agreement with Samsung, customers with Galaxy S20 and S21 or the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus tablet can access repair guides and official Samsung parts at a lower price than independent contractors. Owners can replace the USB-C charge port, and the back cover/glass, and switch out the screen and battery.

Apple Warns of 'Longer Wait Times' for iPhone 14 Pro, Pro Max

Nov 07, 2022 - 10:19 AM - by Reverend
In a press release, Apple confirmed that COVID-19 restrictions in a facility located in Zhengzhou, China resulted in "significantly reduced capacity." It poses a serious problem for Apple as the facility houses iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max assembly lines—the two iPhone 14 models that are proving extremely popular with consumers.

Apple says it's prioritizing the health and safety of workers, so anyone planning to get an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max for the holidays should brace themselves for potential disappointment. The Apple Store is already listing a "4-5 weeks" wait time for shipping, and that's only likely to get worse as the press release goes on to say:

"We continue to see strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. However, we now expect lower iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments than we previously anticipated and customers will experience longer wait times to receive their new products."

Zhengzhou is home to the world's largest iPhone factory, which is operated by Foxconn and employs over 200,000 workers. In mid-October, Foxconn implemented a number of new work policies in a bid to control the spread of a fresh COVID-19 outbreak. Workers were provided with free food, but had to eat in their dorms, and iPhone workers were offered a small pay bonus and transport subsidies.

The controls and incentives weren't enough for many workers, though. On Oct. 31 they began to flee, with video footage showing workers carrying suitcases out of the facility. Foxconn also reported that 20,000 staff had been diagnosed with COVID-19. At the time, it was predicted iPhone production could drop by as much as 30%.

Qualcomm confirms Samsung Galaxy S23 series will use only Snapdragon chipsets

Nov 07, 2022 - 10:14 AM - by Reverend
Samsung is expected to launch its Galaxy S23 series phones in the first week of February according to the latest rumors and this might be the year where all models will launch with the same chipset globally. Rumors about an all-Snapdragon lineup of Galaxy S23 series phones have been going on for months and the latest earnings call from Qualcomm all but confirm these rumors are true.

During their Q4 earnings call Qualcomm CFO Akash Palkhiwala confirmed expectations for a strong second half of the March quarter (Q1) 2023 which likely coincides with the first months of sales for the Galaxy S23 series phones. He also confirmed Qualcomm has moved from a 75% share (of chipsets) in the Galaxy S22 series to a global share - meaning Qualcomm chipsets for all models of the S23 series.

All three Samsung Galaxy S23 series phones (S23, S23+ and S22 Ultra) have already passed through Geekbench exclusively with the alleged Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon confirmed a multiyear partnership with Samsung which will bring Snapdragon chipset to all premium Samsung Galaxy phones globally.

A report from last month still suggests an Exynos-powered Galaxy S23 series is not ruled out despite disappointment from in-house Exynos chips from the Samsung MX (Mobile eXperience) division.
