OnePlus Under Fire for Pre-Installing Facebook Services That Can't Be Removed

Aug 07, 2020 - 11:32 AM - by Reverend
OnePlus is facing criticism for pre-installing Facebook apps on its newest smartphones—and apparently the bloatware can’t be fully removed.

The apps can be found on the new OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, and Nord models; all three come with the Facebook App Installer, Facebook App Manager, and Facebook Services as system apps, according to Android Police, which noticed the issue.

The bloatware paves the way for the social media company to install the Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram apps directly on your phone, without going through the Google Play Store. Users can choose to uninstall the apps. But according to OnePlus owners, the Facebook services can’t be removed; they can only be disabled.

Doing so will prevent the services from working in the background. However, small amounts of data can still be sent to Facebook, reported one OnePlus 8 Pro owner who raised the issue in June.

OnePlus confirmed to PCMag the preinstallation is real. “The OnePlus 8 Series and Nord have these apps and services pre-installed. Older phones will not get these apps and services with later updates,” a company spokesperson said.

iPhone 12 Launching in Two Stages

Aug 04, 2020 - 8:50 AM - by Reverend
Apple has already confirmed that the launch of the iPhone 12 will be delayed due to a "temporarily constrained" supply chain, but now it's thought Apple intends to split the launch into two stages.

Four different models of the iPhone 12 are expected later this year, sporting 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch OLED screens. As MacRumors reports, the latest information coming from sources within Apple's supply chain suggest we're going to see the two 6.1-inch models launch first, followed by the 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch models at a later date. By taking that decision now, Apple will be able to prioritize supply of the 6.1-inch models to cope with early demand, then ramp up production on the other models later on.

As to how much time Apple intends to wait between the two launches, it's thought mainboards for the 6.1-inch devices have started shipping recently, with the second stage devices shipping in late August. If that holds true, it could therefore be a month between the first and second launch windows for the iPhone 12.

Microsoft Announces New Teams Features

Aug 04, 2020 - 8:44 AM - by Reverend
Today, Microsoft announced a set of new features it will add to Team in the current weeks, including one that scales meeting to 20,000 participants.

“There is a broad spectrum of needs that are required to connect employees from the worksite to the main office to the home office, across locations and time zones,” Microsoft’s Nicole Herskowitz writes. “The spectrum starts with the most basic 1:1 meetings and calls with colleagues, to larger group meetings, all the way to large events and conferences … At the other end of the spectrum, Teams modernizes 1:1 calling with a cloud-based phone system in the same Teams app that keeps you in the communications flow.”

Here are the new features that Microsoft announced:

Up to 20,000 participants in Teams meetings. Microsoft limits the size of interactive meetings to 1,000 participants, with a seamless shift to a ‘view only’ mode after the limit is met, for up to 20,000 participants.

Add company branding. Soon, you will be able to add your company’s branding to meetings for a professional look and feel. This will start with branded meeting lobbies that will launch “in the coming months” and will extend to branding the core meeting experience after that. The bad news? This feature requires an Advanced Communications plan, which can be added to any Microsoft 365 or Office 365 paid subscription. You’ll be able to trial this plan in mid-August.

Teams Calling. This new cloud-based phone system helps employees who use phone numbers to make and receive calls with customers, partners, and vendors, whether they are in the office, working from home, or some combination of the two.

Teams Displays. Previously announced, these new solutions offer “a fresh perspective on what a phone could be.” These are dedicated Teams devices with ambient touch screens, high-quality calling and video, and hands-free experiences powered by... [Read More]

We could be closer to getting multiple device support in WhatsApp

Jul 27, 2020 - 7:17 PM - by Reverend
WhatsApp has delivered quite a few features over the years, ranging from Stories and dark mode to QR code support and integration. We still don’t have multiple device support after all this time though, but it looks like we might be a step closer to getting the feature.

Frequent WhatsApp tipster WABetaInfo has uncovered screenshots supposedly showing multiple device support within a pre-release build of the messaging app. The screenshots show an option called “linked devices” available from the main three-dot menu, replacing the WhatsApp Web shortcut.

Screenshots of the “linked devices” menu also note that you can send and receive messages from the browser, computer, and Facebook Portal devices. It’s unclear if this is therefore simply a new home for WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp Desktop, and Facebook Portal functionality. If this is indeed the case, then you’ll still need your phone to be connected to the internet in order to use the likes of desktop and web clients.

In any event, the menu also gives you the ability to view linked devices and log out of a specific device. The tipster adds that WhatsApp could require users to get verification codes sent to their phone in order to log into another phone.

This wouldn’t be the first time we heard murmurings of multiple device support though, as WABetaInfo uncovered references to multiple device support back in November 2019 and again in March 2020. So it looks like the WhatsApp team has been working on this feature for a while now.

PlayStation Plus offers Modern Warfare 2 Remastered, Fall Guys in August

Jul 27, 2020 - 7:11 PM - by Reverend
PlayStation Plus subscribers will get access to two games in August: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.

August’s PS Plus games are unusually timely: the Modern Warfare 2 campaign remaster came to PS4 back in March, and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is a brand-new release. And next-month’s PS Plus releases are staggered: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered will be available to subscribers on Tuesday, July 28, while Fall Guys arrives Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is a remaster of Infinity Ward’s first-person military shooter. The remaster only includes the campaign and not the multiplayer component of the 2009 Call of Duty game.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is a massively multiplayer online party game for up to 60 players. It features physics-based action with free-for-all brawls and team-based co-op challenges. Its debut on PS Plus is sure to give Fall Guys a wide audience, a la multiplayer sensation Rocket League, which similarly debuted on Plus back in 2015.
