Galaxy Fold 2 to come bundled with 25W fast charger

Jul 06, 2020 - 8:05 AM - by Reverend
Samsung is expected to announce four new high-end smartphones—Galaxy Fold 2, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 5G—next month. The design and features of a few of these phones have been leaked ahead of the official announcement, but a few minor details were still missing. Now, the Galaxy Fold 2 5G has passed through China’s 3C certification process, revealing its charger’s specifications.

The 5G variant of the Galaxy Fold 2 with model number SM-F9160 has received the 3C certification, and the supporting documents reveal that the foldable smartphone from Samsung will come bundled with the EP-TA800 charger. The charger has a maximum power output of 9V and 2.27A or 11V and 2.25A, resulting in a total power output of 25W. This is the same charger that comes bundled with Samsung’s other high-end and mid-range smartphones, including the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Note 10 series, and the Galaxy A71.

A 25W charger is a step up from the first-generation Galaxy Fold’s 15W fast charger. It was revealed earlier that the Galaxy Fold 2 will come equipped with two batteries (2,275mAh and 2,090mAh), equalling a combined battery capacity of 4,365AmAh. A recent report had claimed that Samsung could launch the Galaxy Fold 2 in only a 5G variant. The Snapdragon 865+ processor could power the second-generation Galaxy Fold device.
Galaxy Fold 2 rumored specifications

The Galaxy Fold 2 is expected to feature a larger screen on the front with a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera. On the inside, the device could sport a larger, 7.7-inch foldable screen with a 120Hz refresh screen, a punch-hole selfie camera, and UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) protection. It could debut with Android 10 and One UI 2.5 out of the box. The foldable phone is expected to come in 256GB and 512GB storage variants.

Similar to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the Galaxy Fold 2 could sport a triple-camera setup on the rear with a 108MP... [Read More]

Google Photos will no longer back up images from WhatsApp and other messaging apps

Jun 30, 2020 - 2:47 PM - by Reverend
Google is disabling the Google Photos app's image and video backup for folders created by services like WhatsApp, Messages, and Kik. In essence, that means that by default, photos and videos from those services saved on your phone won't be backed up by Google Photos going forward. The change appears to be temporary, and Google hopes it will make a dent in internet resource utilization during the ongoing pandemic. If you prefer, you can easily revert the change manually to re-enable those backups at any time.

The change comes courtesy of an announcement to the Google Photos Help Community, and a separate notification will also be rolling out via the Google Photos app as part of the change starting today.

More details are available in an associated help document, but the very short version is that Google Photos is changing its default setting to disable backing up content in device folders created by apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and Kik. A full list of affected apps is not seemingly available, but XDA Developers' Mishaal Rahman tells us folders from following apps are included:

  • Facebook
  • Helo
  • Instagram
  • LINE
  • Messages
  • Messenger
  • Snapchat
  • Twitter
  • Viber
  • Whatsapp

Previous backups aren't affected by the change, and you can re-enable the setting if you wish to, or manually backup individual items.

OnePlus confirms its upcoming cheaper phones will be called Nord

Jun 30, 2020 - 2:40 PM - by Reverend
OnePlus has announced a new product line of cheaper phones called OnePlus Nord, with the goal of making the “premium OnePlus experience accessible to more users.”

“We are immensely proud of our flagship products and will continue to create more tech-leading flagships for our users. Now we are excited to share the OnePlus experience with even more users around the world through this new product line,” commented OnePlus CEO Pete Lau in the announcement.

OnePlus originally began by selling cheaper devices (the original OnePlus One started at just $299), but it’s become best known for its premium smartphones over the past few years (like the current OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro). Those models have attempted to challenge phones from more entrenched brands like Samsung or LG by offering comparable high-end features and designs at lower prices than most flagships. But even the cheapest OnePlus devices right now start at $699. The new Nord line will look to alleviate that issue by offering cheaper phones than the company’s current offerings.

OnePlus hasn’t offered too many details on what the first OnePlus Nord phone will look like, but it has said that it’ll launch in Europe and India. North American customers interested in the OnePlus Nord line will have a chance through “a highly limited beta program” set for after the main launch internationally.

Earlier leaks indicate that the first OnePlus Nord phone (which, at one point, was rumored to be called the OnePlus Z or the OnePlus 8 Lite) will feature a Snapdragon 765G processor, a 6.55-inch 90Hz OLED display, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. The phone is also expected to offer a 48-megapixel main camera as well as a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens.

OnePlus is expected to announce more details about the first OnePlus Nord phone at a July 10th launch event in India.

Fortnite Is Finally Out Of Early Access

Jun 30, 2020 - 2:37 PM - by Reverend
Nearly three years after the launch of Fortnite: Save the World—the original survival defense game barely anyone played and not the battle royale afterthought that became a worldwide sensation—Epic Games is ripping off that early access bandaid and declaring Save the World a real, premium game. Battle Royale and Creative are losing their early access labels as well. Their little games are growing up.

In a post on the Fortnite website, Epic details the changes coming to Fortnite: Save The World with the switch from early access to... just access. The developer has decided to continue offering Save the World as a premium game, meaning people who wish to play must pay. Folks who purchased founder’s packs for the game will be upgraded to the next level of founder’s benefits, with Ultimate Pack owners gaining a new Metal Team Leader Pack and 8,000 V-Bucks.

The downside to leaving early access is Save the World updates will be slower post-release, and in the coming months it will no longer be able to support cosmetic items purchased through Battle Royale. The upside is the introduction of seasonal ventures, unique season-long adventures crafted to give Save the World players stuff to do instead of the same old stuff they’ve been doing.
