The Windows 11 update rollout has finally ended

May 19, 2022 - 6:39 PM - by Reverend
Windows 11 is now available for everyone, over seven months since the rollout began in October 2021. As of yesterday, Windows 11 has been designated for broad deployment, which means any PC that meets the minimum requirements can now acquire the operating system through Windows Update.

Until now, Microsoft has rolled out the option to upgrade to Windows 11 based on the device’s hardware compatibility. Now anyone can get the update, as long as they still meet those minimum standards.

For everyone still on Windows 10, it’s now pretty simple to update to Windows 11. However, you aren’t required to update to the new OS — at least not yet and not anytime soon. Windows 10 will be supported through 2025.

If you do plan to update, though, you will also need to make sure your computer meets the minimum specs for Windows 11. Those requirements are quite a bit more stringent than operating system updates of the past, which include requiring devices to support TPM 2.0 for security purposes.

Overall, the response to Windows 11 has been sharply divided. Many people love the new aesthetic, cleaner interfaces, and quality of life features. However, it is still quite a bit different than Windows 10, and a lot of people simply aren’t on board with them. This has led to a considerable drop in adoption rates for the new operating system.

To get the free update for Windows 11, you can find it in the Windows Update window in the Settings app.

Microsoft Teams, Windows 11 hacked on first day of Pwn2Own

May 19, 2022 - 6:35 PM - by Reverend
During the first day of Pwn2Own Vancouver 2022, contestants won $800,000 after successfully exploiting 16 zero-day bugs to hack multiple products, including Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system and the Teams communication platform.

The first to fall was Microsoft Teams in the enterprise communications category after Hector Peralta exploited an improper configuration flaw.

The STAR Labs team (Billy Jheng Bing-Jhong, Muhammad Alifa Ramdhan, and Nguyễn Hoàng Thạch) also demonstrated a zero-click exploit chain of 2 bugs (injection and arbitrary file write).

Microsoft Teams was hacked a third time by Masato Kinugawa, who exploited a 3-bug chain of injection, misconfiguration, and sandbox escape.

Each of them earned $150,000 for successfully demonstrating their Microsoft Teams zero-days.

STAR Labs also earned an extra $40,000 after elevating privileges on a system running Windows 11 using a Use-After-Free weakness and an additional $40,000 by achieving privilege escalation on Oracle Virtualbox.

Manfred Paul (@_manfp) also successfully demoed 2 bugs (prototype pollution and improper input validation) to hack Mozilla Firefox and an out-of-band write on Apple Safari to earn $150,000.

Other highlights from the first day of Pwn2Own include Marcin Wiązowski, Team Orca of Sea Security, and Keith Yeo demonstrating more zero-days in Windows 11 and Ubuntu Desktop.

EA Sports will end its video game partnership with FIFA

May 13, 2022 - 9:43 PM - by Reverend
One of the video game industry's most iconic franchises will soon look very different.

Electronic Arts and its subsidiary EA Sports will end a three-decade partnership with FIFA — global soccer's governing body — the gaming company announced on Tuesday. Starting next year, the hugely popular FIFA video game franchise will be known as "EA SPORTS FC."

"This new independent platform will bring fresh opportunity -- to innovate, create and evolve," Cam Weber, EVP and group GM for EA Sports & Racing, said in a statement. "EA SPORTS FC will allow us to realize this future and much more ... but not before we deliver our most expansive game ever with our current naming rights partner, FIFA, for one more year," he added.

EA will still retain most of the team and player likenesses that have made its game so popular, thanks to separate license agreements with global soccer leagues in England, Spain, Italy, Germany, the United States and European soccer association UEFA.

Electronic Arts (EA)' stock was essentially flat following the news.

FIFA said in a statement that it had granted EA a one-year extension to release the FIFA 23 video game later this year, which will feature the upcoming men's and women's World Cups that FIFA organizes. But the governing body will now seek to develop new games with "third party studios and publishers" in the next two years and is in talks for a "major new" FIFA game in 2024.

"I can assure you that the only authentic, real game that has the FIFA name will be the best one available for gamers and football fans," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in the statement. "FIFA 23, FIFA 24, FIFA 25 and FIFA 26, and so on — the constant is the FIFA name and it will remain forever and remain THE BEST."

YouTube Starts Testing Membership Gifting

May 11, 2022 - 6:48 PM - by Reverend
YouTube has begun testing gifted memberships for select channels.

The video-sharing platform's take on Twitch subscriptions lets viewers offer financial support to creators in return for perks like loyalty badges and custom emoji.

A beta version of Channel Memberships Gifting is currently open only to a "small group of creators," but will be expanded to more users over the course of several months. Bear in mind that you'll need to already meet the network's minimum eligibility requirements to enable channel membership.

Qualifying channels will initially only be able to gift memberships to desktop viewers, with mobile access expected as part of the eventual full feature launch. Existing channel members cannot receive a gifted membership.

"With Memberships Gifting, your channel members can buy a set number of channel memberships [five, 10, 20] in a single purchase, that YouTube will 'gift' out to other viewers in your live stream," YouTube explained. Those folks get one month of free premiums, while the creator receives their usual revenue share from each transaction.

Gift memberships can be purchased by clicking the dollar sign icon next to the live chat, which YouTube then distributes based on how much viewers interact with your channel. The most loyal fans, who watch and engage with your content regularly, are more likely to earn a bonus. Recipients are notified via a personal live chat message and email.

"We're not quite ready to make this widely available just yet, so we're launching a beta to get feedback and continue developing features," YouTube said. In the meantime, interested parties can sign up online for access to Memberships Gifting as it rolls out more widely "over the next few months."

Microsoft rolls out new Sound Recorder preview app for Insiders on Windows 11

May 11, 2022 - 6:38 PM - by Reverend
Microsoft has today announced the rollout of a new Sound Recorder app for Insiders in the Dev Channel on Windows 11. The new Sound Recorder replaces the Voice Recorder app already present in Windows, with new features and an updated UI headlining the new experience.

The new app has a new markers feature, which lets you mark specific timestamps in audio recordings for referring back to later. There's now also the ability to import audio files, and you can change your microphone device straight from within the app. Additionally, you can now also change the output file type your recordings are saved as, pretty neat!

Microsoft has been refreshing many of the in-box app experiences on Windows 11 since the OS launched last year. In the last six months, Microsoft has released new versions of Paint, Music Player, Clock, Phone Link, and more. The company says it's working on more updates for in-box apps as well.

Apple is discontinuing its last iPod model

May 11, 2022 - 6:35 PM - by Reverend
Apple said Tuesday it would discontinue production of the last iPod model it still sells, effectively bringing an end to the iconic product line that helped usher in a new era for the music industry and the tech giant.

Apple said customers can continue to purchase an iPod Touch device "while supplies last." The company also noted that customers can now listen to their favorite songs from a range of other Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

"Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry -- it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared," Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement.

"Today, the spirit of iPod lives on," Joswiak added, touting how the music experience ushered in by the iPod has been integrated across "all of our products."

First introduced by Apple's cofounder and then-CEO Steve Jobs in 2001, the iPod helped kick off Apple's tremendous success with handheld devices. The iPod drew customers with its signature scroll wheel and the initial promise of holding "up to 1,000 CD-quality songs" on a device that fits in your pocket. By mid-2007, more than 100 million iPod devices had been sold.

That same year, Apple unveiled the iPhone, which was in many ways the spiritual heir to the iPod Touch. The smartphone, and other Apple devices that followed, eventually made the iPod feel like a relic of the past, long before it was officially discontinued.
