Wikipedia's Desktop Site Is Getting Its First Redesign in 10 years

Sep 24, 2020 - 12:42 PM - by Reverend
A redesign is coming to the desktop version of Wikipedia, which will be its first in ten years.

The change will be gradually rolled out with new features and interface tweaks, according to the nonprofit that oversees the website, the Wikimedia Foundation.

“If all goes to plan, these improvements will be the default on all wikis by the end of 2021, timed with Wikipedia’s 20th birthday celebrations,” the group wrote in a blog post.

Ironically, the encyclopedia site hasn’t undergone any major interface changes over the past decade, even though volunteers are constantly updating it with new entries and content. But now it's time to polish up the site, so that it can attract new users, who may have only recently begun going online.

“In order to welcome them to our projects and entice them to come back, we need to provide not only excellent content and an experience that is engaging and easy to use, but also an experience that is on-par with their perceptions of a modern, trustworthy, and welcoming site,” Wikimedia contributor Olga Vasileva wrote in the blog post.

Google Maps now shows you COVID-19 stats

Sep 24, 2020 - 12:36 PM - by Reverend
Google has already released a number of COVID-related features on its Maps app, including noting potential transit delays due to the outbreak, the relative busyness of local businesses and tagging the locations of nearby COVID testing sites. On Wednesday, Google announced yet another new feature which will inform users as to whether new cases of the virus are on the rise in the area they want to travel to.

Specifically, the company has released a new layer for Maps which displays the seven-day average of new COVID cases per 100,000 people as well as notes whether that infection rate is increasing or decreasing. This layer pulls its data from a variety of sources including Johns Hopkins University, the New York Times, and Wikipedia which in turn get their data from the likes of the World Health Organization, national governments and area hospitals.

The new layer will work for all 220 countries on the planet and begins rolling out to both iOS and Android throughout this week.

The NVIDIA RTX 3080 Is Bidding for Over $80,000 USD on eBay

Sep 18, 2020 - 7:27 AM - by Reverend
NVIDIA’s RTX 3080 went on sale September 17 and instantly sold out upon release. However, many buyers have already put the highly coveted graphics card on eBay for absorbent selling prices. There are even some currently bidding on an RTX 3080 Founders Edition for $80,600 USD.

Although many speculated the product would be in short supply until the tail-end of 2020, none expected it would get so much attention. As of now, the eBay listing has been taken down. But there are some listings going as high as $60,000 USD with 81 bids and 68 watchers.

Most notable about most of these pricy bids is that folks are bidding to purchase someone else’s pre-orders from retailers rather than the physical card already in the seller’s possession. One of these pre-ordered GPUs have already sold for $50,000 USD soon after the card debuted at $699 USD retail.

It is still suggested that potential buys keep a lookout on NVIDIA’s RTX 3080 hub page, where additional information for pricing and availability will be updated.
