Sony Confirms Major PS5 Event for June 4

May 31, 2020 - 9:52 PM - by Reverend
Sony’s PlayStation 5 debuts later this year, but an online-only event scheduled for early June will take us inside the next-generation video game console ahead of its arrival.

Games will earn the most attention, as Sony confirmed “we will soon give you a first look at the games you’ll be playing after PlayStation 5 launches this holiday.” In recent months, third-party publishers and developers committed actual titles to the PlayStation 5. Sony, meanwhile, hasn’t stated which popular franchises or new creations are comprising the platform’s first-party launch lineup. God of War, Infamous, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, and Uncharted might get tapped into with fresh installments showcased during the event.

Studios large and small are joining the announcement to highlight their titles, but it wouldn’t surprise if Sony also offered a glance at the PlayStation 5’s external design. Sony hasn’t shared actual images of the product leading up to this event.

It did reveal a handful of details already, though. Sony unveiled the DualSense controller in April, and most PlayStation 4 games should run on its successor. Any titles built for the PlayStation 4 after July 13 are likely guaranteed to operate through the PlayStation 5, according to a new report.

Sony plans to release the PlayStation 5 in Q4 2020. It’ll likely get released in November to take advantage of holiday shopping, and expect Microsoft to do the same with its Xbox Series X. Both companies, as well as Nintendo, are also prepared to unleash several first-party titles across their platforms. Needless to say, the gaming industry isn’t slowing down.

You’ll be able to watch Sony’s ‘PlayStation 5: The Future of Gaming’ event on YouTube and Twitch. It starts at 4:00PM ET on Thursday, June 4.

'Sign in with Apple' flaw let attackers take over accounts

May 31, 2020 - 9:45 PM - by Reverend
‘Sign in with Apple’ is potentially more private than other login options, but it apparently included a serious security flaw. Researcher Bhavuk Jain recently received a $100,000 bug bounty for discovering (via Hacker News) a flaw in the sign-in service when available through third-party apps. If an app didn’t have its own security measures, an attacker could forge a token linked to any email ID and verify it as ‘valid’ using Apple’s public key. That could allow a “full account takeover” even if you chose to hide your email from other services, Jain said.

Jain found the flaw in April, and it’s already fixed. Apple said there was no evidence of accounts being compromised as a result of the flaw.

There shouldn’t have been any damage done as a result. Nonetheless, the bug probably isn’t what Apple wanted to grapple with in the wake of a string of security issues, including an earlier Mail vulnerability. It’s fixing issues quickly — the question is whether or not it can cut down on these issues going forward.

Xbox aims for another hit with 'Minecraft Dungeons' launch

May 27, 2020 - 11:13 AM - by Reverend
"Minecraft" is one of the best-selling games of all time, with a dedicated fanbase in the hundreds of millions. Now it's getting a new title in the franchise called "Minecraft Dungeons," out Tuesday, which takes the classic block-building, zombie-slaying game into an entertaining adventure format.

Fans of "Minecraft" may enjoy "Minecraft Dungeons," but it doesn't have the building and crafting element of the original title, so hardcore builders will likely skip the new game. The general public could appreciate the fantasy, dungeon-exploring elements.

Unlike "Minecraft," where you can build, mine and customize your surroundings, "Minecraft Dungeons" is focused on exploring dungeons and seeking adventure. Players embark on short missions that can be completed in multiple sittings. Missions can be played alone or in a party of up to four people. Team members get several lives, meaning more chances to complete the mission, even if they are at first killed by dungeon bosses.

"Minecraft," which was released in 2011, is a huge moneymaker for its publisher, Xbox Game Studios, and its Swedish developer, Mojang Studios. More than 200 million copies of "Minecraft" have been sold to date, according to Helen Chiang, studio head of Mojang, which makes it one of the best-selling games of all time, alongside "Tetris" and "Grand Theft Auto V." In 2014, Microsoft bought "Minecraft" and Mojang for $2.5 billion.

More people are playing "Minecraft" while social distancing. Mojang said that in April there was a 25% increase in new "Minecraft" players joining the community and a 40% spike in multiplayer sessions, compared to March. People have thrown "Minecraft" graduation ceremonies and other live events in lieu of in-person gatherings.

"I won't say that it's a good... [Read More]

Google deletes millions of negative TikTok reviews

May 26, 2020 - 7:13 PM - by Reverend
Google has deleted millions of negative TikTok reviews from its Play store after the app's rating fell from 4.5 to 1.2 stars overnight.

The video-sharing platform was inundated with one-star reviews after an Indian creator posted a spoof video of an acid attack.

Faizal Siddiqui has apologised, and TikTok has deleted copies of his clip.

But Google intervened after it determined that critics had set up fake accounts to amplify their protests.

Even so, the move has had limited effect, and TikTok's rating remains below two stars on the official Android marketplace.

The video in question had appeared to show Mr Siddiqui threatening a woman who had decided to leave him.

In the clip, he threw liquid at the woman's face. It was water, but the next scene showed the woman's face covered in make-up that resembled the scars and bruising that acid might cause.

“As per the policy, we do not allow content that risks the safety of others, promotes physical harm, or glorifies violence against women," a spokesman for TikTok said.

"The behaviour in question violates our guidelines and we have taken down content, suspended the account, and are working with law enforcement agencies as appropriate.”

Mr Siddiqui later said that: "As a social media influencer, I realise my responsibility and apologise to anyone who was offended by the video."

After TikTok became embroiled in the backlash, Google removed more than 5 million of its recent one-star reviews but left many others active.

A spokesman for Google said it had taken "corrective action".

"When we learn of incidents of spam abuse, we review and take corrective action to remove inappropriate ratings and comments," he added.

Microsoft is Not Giving up on Skype Even Though Teams Has Been Successful

May 26, 2020 - 7:51 AM - by Reverend
Despite its video conferencing app Teams breaking all records in the social distancing times, Microsoft said it would continue to invest in Skype that has crossed 40 million daily active users. Purchased in 2011 for $8.5 billion, Skype communication tool has failed to keep up with other messaging rivals to date, while Teams has seen a meteoric rise as millions of people work from home.

"We're continuing to invest in Skype. It's growing through all this. You'll see some new features. You'll see Skype and Teams interoperate," Jeff Teper, CVP for Microsoft 365, told VentureBeat. Microsoft Teams registered a new daily record of 2.7 billion meeting minutes in a single day on March 31 - 200 per cent increase from 900 million on March 16.

The number of weekly Teams mobile users grew more than 300 per cent from early February to March. "As Teams lands with consumers and does more things, I think people will pick Teams. But we're not going to be heavy-handed about this. People love Skype. And so, we're not going to get ahead of ourselves here," Teper was quoted as saying.

Microsoft recently revealed that Skype usage was up 70 per cent (month-over-month), while Skype to Skype calling minutes was up 220 per cent in the Covid-19 times. The tech giant said it plans to continue adding new features to Skype. "Facebook, for example, has multiple tools with Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Those all continue to grow. They did work to interoperate with them. They're not forcing a migration from one of their consumer tools to another," said Teper.

"Teams has a very different flavour to it than Skype. It does overlap in the same need, just like Messenger and WhatsApp do from Facebook. And so, we'll have them interoperate, but we're going to continue to show love to the Skype customer base," he was quoted as saying. At its ‘Build 2020' virtual conference last week, Microsoft...
