Instagram Rolls Out Pinned Comments to All

Jul 09, 2020 - 7:39 AM - by Reverend
Instagram is rolling out pinned comments everywhere. Following a successful trial this spring, the social media firm this week announced global access to the feature.

"That means you can pin a few comments to the top of your feed post and better manage the conversation," Instagram said in a Tuesday tweet, encouraging users to choose up to three of their favorite comments to highlight.

Simply swipe left on any remark (just as you would when replying, reporting, or deleting) to pin it to the top of the discussion—be it a clever observation, an intriguing question, or self-serving praise. The author is automatically notified and their comment marked with a "pinned" icon.

Instagram in May unveiled new features to help fight online bullying—including the ability to bulk delete negative comments and block or restrict the accounts posting them. "In addition to removing negative comments, we want to give people an easy way to amplify and encourage positive interactions," the social network said, teasing pinned comments. The feature, according to Instagram, gives folks "a way to set the tone for their account and engage with their community" by tacking high-quality replies to the top of the thread.

Donkey Kong Country coming to Nintendo Switch Online in July

Jul 09, 2020 - 7:36 AM - by Reverend
Nintendo is adding Super Nintendo Entertainment System classic Donkey Kong Country to its Nintendo Switch Online program. Donkey Kong Country, which was originally released in 1994, will be added to the service alongside Natsume Championship Wrestling (SNES) and The Immortal (NES).

These three games will be added to Nintendo Switch Online on July 15, according to Nintendo’s news release. Donkey Kong Country is a classic favorite developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, set in the Donkey Kong world and starring Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. Natsume Championship Wrestling was released the same year on Super NES, and, of course, is a “realistic” wrestling game wherein players fight inside a ring to knock each other out.

The Immortal, developed by Sandcastle and published by Electronic Arts, was released in 1990 on the NES. It’s an action-adventure game set in a labyrinth of ancient ruins.

In total, Nintendo Switch Online has 85 games available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers — the service lets players access the internet in other games, too, like Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Other games on the platform include The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Super Mario Bros. 3.

Individual memberships are priced at $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months, and $19.99 for a year. There’s also a $34.99 option for a yearly family membership, which lets eight Nintendo accounts use the Nintendo Switch Online service.

Apple promises to support Thunderbolt on its new ARM Macs

Jul 09, 2020 - 7:29 AM - by Reverend
Apple is moving away from Intel’s chipsets in favor of its new, custom-designed ARM chips — but the company is promising that it’ll still support Intel’s Thunderbolt USB-C connectivity standard on new Apple silicon computers, despite the lack of Intel processors.

“Over a decade ago, Apple partnered with Intel to design and develop Thunderbolt, and today our customers enjoy the speed and flexibility it brings to every Mac. We remain committed to the future of Thunderbolt and will support it in Macs with Apple silicon,” commented an Apple spokesperson, in a statement to The Verge.

While there was some concern that Apple might be losing support for Thunderbolt on its upcoming Macs, the fact that Apple is sticking with the standard makes a lot of sense, given that it had helped develop the original Thunderbolt standard in collaboration with Intel.

Despite that collaboration, though, Apple has yet to offer Thunderbolt support on any products outside of Intel-powered Macs — Apple’s ARM-based iPad Pro, in particular, stands out as featuring a regular USB-C port, not a Thunderbolt 3 connector. Apple’s ARM-based Developer Transition Kit also only features standard USB-C ports.

The news comes as Intel detailed its upcoming Thunderbolt 4 standard, which will be based on the USB4 spec standard and which uses the same USB-C connector that Thunderbolt 3 already does today. Both Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 offer more guaranteed features (like the ability to power external monitors, or charge laptops) compared to the standard USB 3 and USB4 standards that they’re built off of, and offer a consistency that regular USB-C standards can often be sorely lacking in.

Thunderbolt 4, in particular, offers the same 40 Gbps speeds that Thunderbolt 3 had offered, but adds even stricter hardware requirements for manufacturers: devices will have to be able to support either two 4K displays or one 8K display, and... [Read More]

Galaxy Fold 2 to come bundled with 25W fast charger

Jul 06, 2020 - 8:05 AM - by Reverend
Samsung is expected to announce four new high-end smartphones—Galaxy Fold 2, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 5G—next month. The design and features of a few of these phones have been leaked ahead of the official announcement, but a few minor details were still missing. Now, the Galaxy Fold 2 5G has passed through China’s 3C certification process, revealing its charger’s specifications.

The 5G variant of the Galaxy Fold 2 with model number SM-F9160 has received the 3C certification, and the supporting documents reveal that the foldable smartphone from Samsung will come bundled with the EP-TA800 charger. The charger has a maximum power output of 9V and 2.27A or 11V and 2.25A, resulting in a total power output of 25W. This is the same charger that comes bundled with Samsung’s other high-end and mid-range smartphones, including the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Note 10 series, and the Galaxy A71.

A 25W charger is a step up from the first-generation Galaxy Fold’s 15W fast charger. It was revealed earlier that the Galaxy Fold 2 will come equipped with two batteries (2,275mAh and 2,090mAh), equalling a combined battery capacity of 4,365AmAh. A recent report had claimed that Samsung could launch the Galaxy Fold 2 in only a 5G variant. The Snapdragon 865+ processor could power the second-generation Galaxy Fold device.
Galaxy Fold 2 rumored specifications

The Galaxy Fold 2 is expected to feature a larger screen on the front with a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera. On the inside, the device could sport a larger, 7.7-inch foldable screen with a 120Hz refresh screen, a punch-hole selfie camera, and UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) protection. It could debut with Android 10 and One UI 2.5 out of the box. The foldable phone is expected to come in 256GB and 512GB storage variants.

Similar to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the Galaxy Fold 2 could sport a triple-camera setup on the rear with a 108MP... [Read More]

Google Photos will no longer back up images from WhatsApp and other messaging apps

Jun 30, 2020 - 2:47 PM - by Reverend
Google is disabling the Google Photos app's image and video backup for folders created by services like WhatsApp, Messages, and Kik. In essence, that means that by default, photos and videos from those services saved on your phone won't be backed up by Google Photos going forward. The change appears to be temporary, and Google hopes it will make a dent in internet resource utilization during the ongoing pandemic. If you prefer, you can easily revert the change manually to re-enable those backups at any time.

The change comes courtesy of an announcement to the Google Photos Help Community, and a separate notification will also be rolling out via the Google Photos app as part of the change starting today.

More details are available in an associated help document, but the very short version is that Google Photos is changing its default setting to disable backing up content in device folders created by apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and Kik. A full list of affected apps is not seemingly available, but XDA Developers' Mishaal Rahman tells us folders from following apps are included:

  • Facebook
  • Helo
  • Instagram
  • LINE
  • Messages
  • Messenger
  • Snapchat
  • Twitter
  • Viber
  • Whatsapp

Previous backups aren't affected by the change, and you can re-enable the setting if you wish to, or manually backup individual items.

OnePlus confirms its upcoming cheaper phones will be called Nord

Jun 30, 2020 - 2:40 PM - by Reverend
OnePlus has announced a new product line of cheaper phones called OnePlus Nord, with the goal of making the “premium OnePlus experience accessible to more users.”

“We are immensely proud of our flagship products and will continue to create more tech-leading flagships for our users. Now we are excited to share the OnePlus experience with even more users around the world through this new product line,” commented OnePlus CEO Pete Lau in the announcement.

OnePlus originally began by selling cheaper devices (the original OnePlus One started at just $299), but it’s become best known for its premium smartphones over the past few years (like the current OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro). Those models have attempted to challenge phones from more entrenched brands like Samsung or LG by offering comparable high-end features and designs at lower prices than most flagships. But even the cheapest OnePlus devices right now start at $699. The new Nord line will look to alleviate that issue by offering cheaper phones than the company’s current offerings.

OnePlus hasn’t offered too many details on what the first OnePlus Nord phone will look like, but it has said that it’ll launch in Europe and India. North American customers interested in the OnePlus Nord line will have a chance through “a highly limited beta program” set for after the main launch internationally.

Earlier leaks indicate that the first OnePlus Nord phone (which, at one point, was rumored to be called the OnePlus Z or the OnePlus 8 Lite) will feature a Snapdragon 765G processor, a 6.55-inch 90Hz OLED display, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. The phone is also expected to offer a 48-megapixel main camera as well as a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens.

OnePlus is expected to announce more details about the first OnePlus Nord phone at a July 10th launch event in India.
