The registry tweak didn't work even though I rebooted.

But "Use classic folders" did the trick. I figure that explorer.exe crashed when it tried it preview the video. That's why thumbnail view crashed it immediately. And selecting the file caused the crash 'cause it was trying to preview the video in the left column Great!
