Hackers have been tampering with electronic road signs in several US states, including Illinois and Texas, warning rush-hour commuters of raptors and zombies on the road ahead.

Traffic safety officials, however, took a dim view of the practical jokes. Joe Gasaway, of the Illinois department of transportation, warned that such pranks distracted drivers from legitimate hazards down the road and could perhaps endanger the lives of road crews.

Tampering with an official traffic control device is a misdemeanour punishable by a fine of up to $250 (173 pounds) in Illinois.
